The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
